HUTT NOT MUCH AFFECTED
The heavy downpour of last night had not this morning appreciably raised tho..level of the Hutt River, which has remained about two feet above normal since last week. As a considerable amount of the rain was from the South it may not have affected tho upper reaches of the- Hutt. Petone suffered somewhat severely from surface water to-day. In Jackson street East the water was in many cases over the footpath and entered shop doorways. Nearly all the streets on the old show grounds property (Wilford Settlement) were flooded, in many cases right over the footpaths and down garden paths. Ifia value of the western hills drainage is very evident as tho western area of Petone and Te Momi, which was the area subject to flooding, is now comparatively dry. In some parts of Lower Hutt surface water caused inconvenience. The Awamutu creek is running very high, but no damage has so far been reported.
