ROSE AND BAYNE COMPETE
The chief attraction at a sports meeting held on Monday at Waikari, in the Canterbury province, was the appearance of G. Bayne, of. Wellington, the Wellington provincial and New Zealand one-mile champion, and E. A. Eose, record-holder and New Zealand three-mile champion. After having competed in the one-mile handicap earlier in the programme, Eose, in the two-miles handicap, made an attempt to lower his Australian and New Zealand record of Stain 20sec for the distance, but unfortunately weather conditions were very adverse, and the track was somewhat bumpy. The race was run in a strong and bitterly cold wind, and Rose, I who slackened his pace over the latter stages, apparently realising that to make record time was out of the question, registered lOmin 0 2-ssec. He was first, and was presented with the Saundercock Cup, which went with the race. The mile handicap was won by a Timaru Boys' High School student, F. Garland, who started from the 160 yds mark. Bayne was second, and Eoee third. Bayne's time was 4min 28sec.
