THREE MEN IN A BOAT

DUCHESS'S TRIP TO AUCKLAND'

It 5s said to be almost certain that a prosecution under the Shipping and Seamen's Act is to follow the trip rnartft from Wellington to Auckland, recently; by the former Eastbourno ferry steamer Duchess. After aii attempt to tow the vessel by the Government motor-ship Maui I^omaro' had proved unsuccessful, the Duchess left under her own steam, early last Tuesday morning with her three now owners as the crew. They ( were Captain D. H. Cambridge, master; Mr. J. A. MacDohald, engineer; and Mr. W. H. Henderson, deck hand. The Marine Department had given a permit for the Duchess to be towed to Auckland on condition that she carried pjo« visions, fuel, and a crew of four. Th« Duchess arrived at A\icklajid on Saturday morning after an uneventful trip, but it is stated that the following regu? lations' were infringed:—(l) The Duchess had no valid certificate of survey, as she had not been surveyed since 1928; (2) she had no articles; and (3) she was -undermanned, being required to carry a crew of about 12.
