HARDWARE VIEWS

'•Two tariff blunders,'' is the title of the •'•'New Zealand Hardware Trades Journal' for September. The' first is the Canadian tariff war, and the second the new rates on imported timber. The former the trade journal quoted holds to be provocative of reprisals and the latter is described as inexcusable, for ' "everyone admits that the rough sawn, large sizes cannot be produced in New Zealand, because the timber does not grow to the right lengths, and must be held for building." The journal is of the opinion that if importers are paying the high bank exchange rates the exporters are reaping the benefit, moreover, "if the banks are charging a premium of 5 per cent, for telegrapli transfers to London at the moment, they are paying substantially for London funds, and are probably making less money than at the previous .lower rate because of the decreased business." ■
