OLD AGE PENSIONS BILL

DE VALERA'S PROSPECTS

BUGBY, 28th March,

The Bill on which tho Irish Free State Government was defeated by 66 votes to 64 in the Dail last night was one extending old-age pensions. It had been introduced by the de Valera Party. The Bill was opposed by the Government on the grounds that it would involve an extra cost of from £250,000 to £300,000 yearly. The Bill was supported by the Labour Party and some Independents. To-day Mr. W. T. Cosgrave, President of the Executive, announced at a brief meeting of the Dail that the Government would resign and on his motion the Dail adjourned until next Wednesday, when it will proceed with the election of a President.

Mr. O'Kelly, who acts as loader of tho do Valera, Party in the absence of Mr. de Valera, who is On his way home from America, said that his party was prepared to nominate Mr. do Valera as President.

Tho genoral belief in Dublin is that Mr. do Valcra will be defeated and Mr. Cosgrave will bo re-elected.

Mr. Cosgrave was elected to the Presidency in 1922 and re-elected in 1927,
