WITH TENT AND CAR
EASTER IN THE SOUTH
J SOME HOLIDAY SUGGESTIONS
~ : l " : By "Trip." ?. ■-■■ (ill Bights Reserved.) ■'•> Easter falls this year at a time when camping is usually consumed -We-or less over as far as the South f^d is concerned, so that who intend camping-m have to keep rnor ..than one eye on the weather. Wet leather during camping is not so bad W camp is not being moved lelch of homo comfort, while if beach "camping is desired the very best is w-ith-Stonr or .two of both centres. ;3uns to Lakes Mohowai Manapoun, ; a nd Te Anau, any of -winch make ade Rightful camping holiday, are within "easy compass, only a day's run being required to reach them. ;■ Provided the weather is settled, however, there is no reason why a long 'i-ound trip should not be undertaken. I}no I would suggest as giving the best 'possible journey through Otngo and 'Southland and the lakes would be. fiom jJunedin to Invercargill, and thence to Xakes Manapouri and Te Anau. Irom ■here make back to Lumsdon and then go 'i)n to Kingston, putting the car on tiie ?boat for Queenstown. After a day or ;two there,' and at Pembroke on Lake :'Wanaka, continue on to Mount Cook if time permits, and make back either ''through Fairlie and Timaru, or through Omarama and Oamaru. A journey such "as this could be done comfortably in .eight days. Easte is the longest •break in 'the year for many people, and ■-with good weather full advantage might -as well be taken of it. * CANTERBURY DISTRICT. i Motorists not wishing to go too far Away from Christchurch have their 'choice of several good beach resorts, of which Timaru is easily the most popular. Akaroa is within handy distance of the city, and is a great place for a ■quiet motor-camping holiday. Further :inorth the beaches around Kaikoura 01----'i£er infinite possibilities. ' A round trip from Christchurch, *vhich can, if necessary, bo done in four to five days, is across to the West Coast, and theneo up through the area which suffered in the earthquake -to Nelson and Blenheim, and back to Christchurch again. By setting out to Springfield early to get the car on one of the first trains- of the day, Beefton could be reached the first night. The second day could be spent in the Murehison district. On the third day the run from Nelson to Blenheim could be made, and on to Christchureh the fourth day. This journey is, of course, a fairly strenuous one, and if a few extra days could be spent en route more would be seen and the tour be more of a holiday. . • The autumn and winter months are good ones for visiting the West Coast and Franz Josef Glacier, for their rainy season is later in the year, in the spring. It is not at. all unusual to have bright sunny days throughout April with practically no rain, so that those who are anxious to, go to the glacier should seize the opportunity, providing the weather is right. The* road down is good and practically all of the creeks have been bridged; it would have to be exceptionally bad weather to hold a party up. Pine weather is essential, and to reap the best from the trip mileh1 las to be done afoot. ■ MILFOED TRACK. The Milford track season usually ends «m loth April, but as Easter falls only a ■ few days later it is practically certain to be kept open until after then. This •will give motorists their last opportunity of visiting Milford t? ': season. Actually this is one of the journeys for ■which the car is of least use. . There are no garages at Te Anau; the car must either be left in the open or garaged at Lumsden, the service car being used to reach the lake, i Another great place for a camping holiday is Lake Tekapo, on the TimaruMount Cook road. Motorists from the south can make the journey more interesting by running up from Oamaru to Omarama, and then returning through ffimaru. There is splendid camping at Tekapo, and plenty of fishing and fogMotorists who desire .information kbout roads or motor camping should ■write to "Trip," P.O. Box 1178, "Wellington, enclosing a.stamped addressed envelope for reply.
