NEWS OF THE DAY
Flights from Kongotai. I Captain M. C. M'Gregor arrived at lfoiigotai from Christ-church in his Moth with a passenger at !).50 yesterday afternoon. He left Christehurch at 3.15 p.m. and made a non-stop flight in excellent time with the assistance of the southerly wind. Yesterday afternoon also Captain G. H. Bolt, in an AvroAvian, ilew over to Blenheim and back with a passenger, who was making a business trip. The journey occupied abput forty minutes--each way. League of Nations Union. Referring to the League of -Nations Union at the New Zealand Club's luncheon yesterday, Sir Richard Winfrey said he had taken a keen interest in the League of Nations Union ever since the war, and he was glad to say that in Britain all political parties and all religious denominations realised that it was necessary to uphold the hands of the British Government, whatever party it might belong to, and give it strength to go forward with the League of Nations movement. The only way for us to show that we were in earnest about it was to form League of Nations Unions everywhere. They had spread all over England, and he was certain that they were having a tremendous influence on the people. Ho hoped that the people of New Zealand would take an even more active interest in the formation of branches of the union. For Aero Club Members. The somewhat unattractive plaque which members of the Wellington Aero Club have hitherto worn has been replaced by a nietal badge of a design similar to that adopted by the Auckland Aero Club. Tho new badge consists of a pair of wings about one and a half ,■ inches long, after the stylo of the Eoyal Air Force emblem, but without a eVown in tho centre. Instead of tho crown there is a yellow disc bearing a monogram composed of tho letters "W.A.C.," and tho word "Wellington" appears on a black label at the foot. The first batch of new badges was issued yesterday. Weak in Geography. Evidently business men 'in Czechoslovakia are aware that such a place as Dnnedin exists, I)Ut they do not know in which country it is to be found. A letter from Czecho-Slovakia reached Dunediu yesterday morning addressed to one of the Byrd Expedition members, "Dunedin, U.S.A." Tho letter first reached New York, where the Post Office stamped it with "Deficiency in address," and the Americanf authorities, knowing by now where Dunedin is to bo* found', added. "New Zealand" to the address. Perhaps tho writer of the letter figured it out that as the expedition was an American one and the base was at Dunedin, it must necessarily be an American town. Malolo to Visit Wellington. The Auckland manager of the Tourist Department, Mr. J. W. Clarke, has received advice that it is proposed that the Matson liner Malolo, which visited Auckland early last December on a tour of the Pacific, should repeat the tour this year (states the "New Zealand Herald"). Tentative arrangements are for the Malolo to leave San Francisco on 20th September, and call at fourteen countries. Her itinerary, has beenaltered so that she will call at two more ports in Java and Borneo, and one each in Sumatra and New Guinea. From New Guinea she is to go. direct to Sydney, and from there to Melbourne. The Malolo is expected to reach Wellington, where she did not call on her previous trip, on 28th November, and will leave on 29th November. She is due at Auckland on Ist December, and will leave on 3rd December, to reach San Francisco on 20th December.
