CAPITAL EXPENDITURE APPOINTMENTS AND RESIGNATIONS A meeting of the Wellington Hospital Board was held yesterday afternoon, Mr. C. iVT. Luke presiding. The chairman stated that 133 applications had been received for the .position of lady visitor, rendered vacant by the resignation of Miss Kirk. The applications were considered by a sub-committee and reduced to nine; the number was, after further consideration, reduced to three. The committee submitted the names of the three applicants, the first in order of preference being Miss Leila Gray, of Hataitai, AVelliugton. After a brief discussion, a motion to make the selection by ballot was negatived and Miss Gray was appointed. Miss L. Gray was trained in the Wellington Hospital; has done war work; was for two years a school nurse; and for the past three years has been on the staff of the Nursing Guild of St. John, as senior district visitor. The salary of the lady visitor is £250 per annum, rising £10 annually to a maximum of £300. COMMITTEE'S RECOMMENDATIONS. The following report and recommendations of the General Committee were agreed to:—That application be made to the Director-General of Health for authority for a bank overdraft not exceeding £25,000 for the first quarter of the ensuing year. That application be made to the Director-General of Health for an advance of subsidy up to £25,000. That tenders have been called for the engineering.and plant installation at the Ewart Hospital—closing date to be noon on Tuesday, Bth April, 1930; and that tenders be called for hardware, painters' ■ and glaziers' materials, and electrical fittings. That the Government Architect's suggestion to cover thefloors of the Ewart Hospital with linoleum at a cost of £274' bo approved. That in order to place the denture work on a more satisfactory basis, half the fee be paid before the work is undertaken and the balance on receipt of the denture, it having been found that frequently the department was left with dentures half finished, the patients failing to keep their final appointments. That a diathermy knife be purchased, the approximate landed cost being £85. It was reported that a balance-sheet had been received from the New Zealand branch of the British Ked Cross Society in connection with the recent garden fete, showing a balance of £118 11s lOd. A cheque for this amount had been re-. ceived and credited to the Radio Fund. The board resolved that the resignation of Miss K. M. Wemyss, assistant dispenser, be accepted, and that Miss H. Sheil, who is finishing her apprenticeship at the beginning, of July, be promoted to the vacancy, at a salary of £200 per The resignation of Miss E. M. Uniacke as masseuse was received, and Miss Roussell (temporary masseuse) was appointed to fill the vacancy. The resignation of Dr. J. A. Doctor as honorary assistant surgeon in the eye, ear, nose, and throat department was accepted, and the vacancy will be filled when .appointing the members of the honorary staff during the month of April. The estimated capital expenditure for the year 1930-31 was set down by the General Committee as £65,654, including £17,094 for general purposes, £38,560 for additions to Ewart Hospital, Victoria Hospital, and Nurses' Home, and £10,000 suggested loan for new mortuary and postmortem room. ■ The chairman said it would be observed that the capital expenditure required for general purposes in the coming financial year was larger than that of last year. The General Committee was of opinion that none of the works on the list could be held over any longer; they were necessary in order that the efficiency of the institution, should be maintained. , Mr. F. Bennett urged, that a covered way be constructed between the hospital and the nurses' home. The work would be inexpensive, and was necessary, especially in wet winter weather. The estimates were adopted. The tenders of the following firms for supplies were accepted:—Meat, Wood Bros.; fish, N.Z. Fisheries, Ltd.; groceries, Burch and Co.; meat (Ohiro Home), Wood Bros. The board accepted the tender of K. H. Wilson and Son for funerals. For supplies of meat authorised by the Social Welfare Committee in the city and suburban districts, the tenders of the following firms were accepted:—J. W. Newport, Seatoun; H. Yates, Berhampore; Howard and Tilyard, Island Bax H. M. Harris, Lyall Bay; F. Flipp, Kilbirnie; Barber and Co., Lambton quay; Gear Meat Co., Petone.
