CIMABTJE'S pJMT RACE i PAHU AT LAST '..■ (By Telegraph from "Vedette.") .- If the. two classic races at. Awapuni oh the opening day- were, disappointment^, nothing could be held against that of yes•terday, for the Manawatu Stakes was a 'fine race. 'Cimabue and Toxeuma put in whirlwind rushes in the straight to beat Paganelli, who was taken along in the early stages by Lady Parm 'There was very little between Cimabue;' Toxeuma, and Paganelli, but with Cimabue giving 31b to Paganelli and 51b to Toxeuma the honours, of the' race were with him. This should settle all arguments /about. the merits of Cimabue and Paganelli, for Cimabue was: decidedly superior. H. B. Ixifigan thus won both classic events —the Sires' Produce Stakes with Gesture, and the Manawatu Stakes with Cimabue. ' Pahu broke a sequence, of unlucky runs in hack races by scoring in the principal handicap. lie was fairly well, backed so many of .his admirers must., have stuck to him a little. , Richfield also atoned for Fome reajnfc disappointments and finished particularly well to score in the open sprint. . , ~. ' The success or otherwise of handicapping has to be judged by results, arid in this respect the Manawatu Club's official,. ' \MrV J. E. Henrys, scored v distinct triumph in race after race. He did not have a finish of the quality of that of the open" sprint event of the; first day, but there Were three or four desperate struggles, the results of which were unknown. By the public until Mr. AVI 'P. Russell. hoisted the numbers. . '■'-■■■ ' '■ As a mark of respect to an old ofticia^ of the club, the late Mr. R. Stevens, the; flag on the official stend.; was. flown at ha^'mast during both, days of the meet-; '"fiather better weather conditions pre-; vailed for the conclusion of. the Manawatu Eacing Club's Meeting yesterday, the;, track being in similar order, to that ot the. first day. There 'was'-a- fair attendance,: the totalisator returns being £25,343 compared yith £21,389 last year. : The total, for the meeting was £51,355, as against '£43,121. , ......... . ■ KAIRANGA HURDLES. '. Whenuanui was a very hot ■■. favourite, ;buf Aurora Borealis dismayed .■backers by, proving her fust day form all wrong".
lied Bank and WheSuamii-.lecC from tin iirst -fence from Elicit, Diana's Lad, Airtight, and Vivo. Whenuamii, \ivo, heil Bank led out of the straight from Diana s Lad, Elicit, and Aurora Borealis. Aurora Borealis rushed up to the lead six furlongs from home from Wlienuninu, Airtight; Diana's Lad, and Elicit. From this: lipillt ■Whcnuanui beat a retreat and Aurora Borealis was well clear at the last fence from Diana's Lad, Elicit, and Airtight. . Elicit made a bold bid in the run in but Aurora Borealis held him off by a length. Diana's Lad was two lengths away, third with Airtight and Red Bunk Ifengths away. '•Aurora Borealis showed a very marked improvement in form for in a fast run race she took charge early and won from ai really good horse in Elicit, who earned his' Ust 71b like a good one. Diana s Lad agaiii ran.a solid race, and Airtight shaped '--well, Whenuauui and Red Bank both failed -to stay and collapsed completely a" long* way from home. Vivo threw her rider,- Jit. Nicoll, heavily at the second last.fence. ;i^?;; LOCKWOOD HANdICAP. ■i Just an Idea and Lord Thomond were riraqtically. equal favourites with good sup-port-for Golden Shadow, Cadland, Ben Hur, and Hurly Burly. Jußt an Idea .began: best from Abbey Queen, Golden, Shadow, Lord Thomond, Potoaform, Ladland, and Winloch. Just an Idea, Golden Shadow, and Winloch together led'Glenrossie, Fotoaform, Cook, and Loril iliomond at the half mile. Racing into the straight Golden Shadow just led Just an Idea and Potonfonn. Just an Idea, .headed off Golden Shadow in the run home, to win by half a length. Potoafornrwas two lengths back third with Lord Thomond, Abbey Queen, Glenrossie, and Hurly J3urly n<2Just an Idea improved by his race on the first day and ridden to greater advantage won nicely from Golden Shadow, who again went d good race. Potoaform, who carried 111b overweight, did well to reach third place. Lord Thomond was not overlueky, and Abbey Queen and Glenrossie both went fair races. Ben Hur and Easterly fell two furlongs from home.1 V TAMATETE HANDICAP. Skerry Damon was a hot favourite, but: another outsider rolled home m PaM; Paliu- and Ruanui led right round to the half-mile from The Swell and Shrewd, with; Dolomite, Merry Damon, and Balloon following .in close order. Balloon and Shrewd moved up going to the turn, wliere: Pahu, Ruanui, Shrewd, and loon were practically inline with Merry Danion coming up on the rails. A great finish, saw Pahu win by a neck from Merry Damon, who beat The Swell by a neck, J-with Shrewd and Ruanui heads awa& and : Dolomite next. PaW recompensed those thick and tlnn bibkers' who stuck to him and placed himself out of hack races, which be has been unable to win of late, at one stroke. He-was lucky to beat Merry Damon,, who tried to get through on the rails with only moderate success. The Swell raced on solidly again, and Shrewd and Ruanui both: went first-class races. Dolomite, played up at the barrier and went just a moderate race., STONYHURST HANDICAP. Head Serang, Fernden, and Arikiwai all were the medium of solid wagering. Briar Root, Panther, and Consent led from Head. Serang, Miss Ransom, Juggle, and Lianore. Miss Ransom ran to the front 'at'the end of a furlong.with Briar Root, |aiid then came Head Seraug, Consent, Panther, Lianore, and Callanmore. Briar Root, Lianore, Fernden, Panther, MifSs Ransom, Consent, and Juggle were most prominent racing for the turn. Fernden ran?, into the lead just after reaching the straight, where Head Serang became prominent arid Panther was being driven along. Fernden cam c on to win easily ibyStwo lengths from Head Seraug, who ibea v t.* Panther by half- a length. Full Feather was finishing on fourth, and Briar Root, Consent, Lianore, and Miss Ransom followed in that order. •: Fernden won very easily at the finish, ia'nd was much too good for the opposi-;iiidn;.,:-Head Serang made rather a late mill, but would not have beaten Fernden. Panther had his tongue over the bit, but vanone of his typical races. Full Feather tailed off early and ran round his field on the turn, but the distance was too short. Briar Root ran a good race. Consent, ;-. Lianore, Juggle, and Miss Ransom showed pace: ;"| MANAWATU STAKES. lipjiganelli was at odds-on, with Cimabue 'at- good odds. Paganelli received all the ■best of the start from Ceremony, Toxeuma, fiady Pam, and Cimabue in a bunch, i Paganelli was joined by Lady Pam inside ■$•■ furlong, the pair being clear of Toxe:^tjl;a.:and Cimabue racing past the three •f&lorigs,■'. with Lineage moving up. Lady Pain-was beaten at-the turn, where Cima■Bjie'and Tbxeuma had closed up. Cimabue j?o.t to'Paganelli a furlong from home, and Toxeuma put in great work. A stirring finish saw Cimabue stave off Toxeuma by half'a:head, with Paganelli a head away third. Lineage was right up fourth, and Ceremony and Lady Pam some lengths back. The time was a record for the race. Cimabue. was the obvious winner at the turn, ■ and ■he finished very solidly and brilliantly. He was almost eclipsed, howt\cr, by Toxeuma, who put in a terrific iiln over the last furlong. Paganelli had the best of the start, but Lady Pam going 'nith him early, while it quite settled hei chance, prejudiced also that of Paganelli. He was not disgraced although beaten. Lineage finished on very well, and the can be marked down for an early -inn. Cciemony faded right out. CLOVERLEA NURSERY HANDICAP. Chief Joy, Autopay, Isa, and Green Linnet were all well backed. Chief Joy was hopelcsslj left, and Green Linnet began ■very smartly from Isa, Sporting Chance, Autopaj, and Arajean. Green Linnet led Attfopav, Isa, Sporting Chaucc, Arajean, Tupping, and Whelk to the turn. Autopay thiew out a determined challenge in the stiaight, and Isa hung on well on the inside A great finish saw Green Linnet beat Aulopay by a short head, with Isa a similar distance away. Sporting Chance was fouith, and Tripping, Ball Dress, Whelk, and Terra Firma were next.'. Gieen Linnet won her race by her good stait, while Autopay had to be rushed up fiom No 17 at the barrier. He registered a fine finishing effort. Isa also.ran up to her Trentham form, and hers was a solid and pleasing effort. Tripping was unlucky at the start, and Ball Dress and Whelk lan fair races after not being smart aiva> Backers of the favourite lost their money at the start. ADDERSTONE HANDICAP. Ro>al Opera was easily first choice after his defeat of Palm on the first day, Belle btti bung at a great price. Marieu, and Belle Star were well clear racing down the back from Myola, Advcutus, Air Force, Mount Shannon, General Gas, mid Royal Opera. Marica still led Bolle Star at the turn, with Myola, Air Force, Skyrider, Royal Opera, and General Gas handy. Belle Star strode to the front, and appeared to be winning easily when Royal Opera and Tunbridge bore down on Her and she had to be kicked up to hold them off by a neck. Royal Opera and Tunbridge dead-heated for second, with Pedestal next, and then coming General Gas, Spearform, and Latakia right up in line with him. Belle Star showtd how unlucky she was on the opening day, for in reality she won rather easily. Royal Opera did not receive the best of passages, but over the concluding stages had his chance on the •rails and finished well. Tunbridge was apparently hopelessly placed two furlongs from home, and did well to reach third ;place. Pedestal was almost down just on i"tne home' turn, and must be adjudged unlucky. General Gas went the improved race .the. betting suggested, and Spearform went a fair race. •'*.'■■;■ TELEGRAPH HANDICAP. Bcnzora was a firm favourite, with solid support for Equitant, Royal Duke, Lichfield, and Ridgemount. Royal Duke
led out from Bunzora, Ridgemount, ; Equitanl; ami Dobbin, but Ridgemount soon van to the front to show the way to Equitant, Benzoi'a, Royal Duke, Bobbin, and Malayan. Benzora lost his place racing round Die top. where Uicli field improved. Royal Duke headed off Ridgemount as they straightened up tor home, with Equitant beaten and Richfield showing up. Richfield gradually overhauled Royal Duke and won going away by a length. Dobbin, who finished on, was hall a length away third, with Benzorn fourth just'in front of Ridgemount and Melissa. Richfield improved a good deal on his recent efforts, 'but he has not been lucky, &nd on this occasion had to register a good effort to score. Royal Duke ran o fine race, and Dobbin and Benzora were, both unlucky. Ridßemount collapsed when he was tackled at the business end of the race. Malayan again went a decent race. ■'.
