BOTH SIDES PREPARED
COMING CLASH IN CHINA
NANKING'S DEFENCES
(Keceived 27th March, 1 p.m.) SHANGHAI, 26 th March. Nanking's seeming indifference towards the combined revolt of Yen HsiShau and Feng Yu-hsiang is merely superficial. Extensive preparations to resist the Northern offensive are reported now to be completed. Foreign observers intimate that general hostilities will break out within three weeks. Nanking is confident of victory, relying on Chiang-K-ai-shek's defences to defeat the anti-Government movement. According to the latest information received from the Tsinpu Eailway and the Hankow fronts, the National forces have built an elaborate system of defences extending from Suchow along the entire strategic front, and the Tsinpu line construction work is being completed. Three months previously, following the mutiny at Shihyusan and Pukow in December, defences were arranged under the direction of German military advisers.
