AUSTRALIAN LABOUR
AND PAN-PACIFIC BODY
AFFILIATION REJECTED
(Received Ist March, 8 a.m.)
MELBOURNE, This Day.;'
There was a long debate at the Trades Union Conference yesterday as to whether they should' continue affiliation with the Pan-Pacific Secretariat, the ■ spokesman for which was Mr. J. S. Garden, who said that the policy of this body was to raise the wage standard of foreign nations to that of the Australian.
Several delegates urged that this amounted to an attempt to break down the white Australia policy. Moderate speakers argued that the Secretariat was dominated by Communists of Bussia with whom trade unionists : in Australia had nothing in common.
Mr. Garden's proposal for a continuance' of affiliation was rejected after a stormy session by five votes.
