SUB-ASSOCIATIONS

TENNIS DELEGATES' APPROVAL

A 'motion on the subieot of the formation of sub-associations led to a lengthy discussion, with particular reference • to tho position; in: the Hutt Valley, at the quarterly meeting of-the -Wellington Lawn Tennis Association' last evening. Mr. J/W. Kelly moved the following resolution, notice of which had been given:—"That an additional clause (o) be added to rule 3 of tho constitution: 'Subassociations consisting of clubs within the limit of a clearly-defined geographical boundary, and having not less than 300 active members.''' ■■■■~•■" ■'__■ ■■:". ..■, ~ The secretary-(Mr. W. B. Watson) said that iii hie opinion the formation ot a sub-association ini'tho• Hiitt: Valley would not be in the interests of the Wellington Association financially. Ho thought it would be a serious step to take at this J"SIr. U D. M. Kean said he thought the ■formation of a, Hutt Valley sub-association would be all right. Public support was growing,: and it would continue to do so every year. Players should be encouraged, even under., a sub-association; ■ "1 think that ;if the formation .of a sub-centre is going to'further the interests of tennis in the Hutt Valley; then by all ■means .• let. them., have, their sub-associa-tion," : said Mr.. 1. Reeves. ■;■■■■ ; Mr. H.:R. Baigent said he did not think the Hutt Valley: clubs had anything to gain by forming a sub-association. Their powers would be just the same as though they came in as clubs,, except that they would have a glorified title. In his opinion the Hutt Valley clubs stood to gain nothing; it appeared to him, that they stood, to lose. .':•' .-.• . •':". ; ;

' Another delegate, in support of the motion, said that the argument against the formation of a sub-association at the Hutt seemed to be that the Hutt clubs had not helped the association enough in connection with the Miramar courts. ' There were some courts in the Hutt.that he was sure leading Wellington players would not play on. In his opinion it was not reasonable that the Hutt cluhs should first consider Miramar and then their own courts. ..•'..■ ■ f '; > ■ '.. '■'./■. 'Mr. Keljy. agreed to the following words, suggested by Mr. Reeves, being incorporated at the end of hia motion: "And haying\the nearest club not nearer than five miles from, the headquarters of the parent association;" . The motion^ was carried. L I It waa decided that if; the Hutt clubs desire to form a sub-association they must make formal application. A courtesy .extended at the previous meeting allowing the Hutt clubs to carry on unconstitutionally was extended until the next quarterly meeting. ■ ■ ~
