The prohibitive price of potatoes has led to a diminution of consumption^ with the result that the price fell today £4 per ton to £18-. Merchants think the housewives' boycott, coupled with the threat to bring in New Zealand potatoes to Australia, is largely responsible for the drop. _ Tasmanian growers disclaim responsibility for the famine prices, and -ie< clare that the bad season, and flood*' affected tho crops. .
