Completion of the South Island Main Trunk Line was -Urged on Wednesday evening by Mr. J. E. Strachan, president of the. Canterbury Progress League (states the. Christchurch '' Press). At a meeting of the executive, he moved that a copy of a report presented to the executive on 6th May, 1925,.5h0u1d be sent to the :iWellington ' Chamber of Commeiee, ■with a letter expressing' a
hope that the information in the report, will remove some of the.doubt in that, b,ody's ■ mind as^totho advisableness of completing the line. ' Mr. Strachan stated that tho Wei-; iingtqn Chamber had decided to ask the Government to make further inquiries, and 'to obtain, a report on the profit-' earning capacity of the lino under present conditions, before incurring expenditure on additional construction work. Mr. IP. W. Freeman: '{The North Island is not happy unless it is getting the /share. It does not wish to spare even a morsel for the South Island. What we ask is only our just due." Mr. G. M. Hall said that the most important line to be completed at present was the Gisborno line. It was moro important than even the Christ-charch-Picton lino. Gisborne was the most isolated place in New Zealand. It was decided to send copies of the abridged report to members of Parliament and to bodies interested in the subject. On Mr. J. D. Hall's motion, appreciation was expressed of Sir Joseph Ward's announcement, as to the completion of the lino.
