Sir David Maurice Serjeant, who died in January this year, and would have been 99 had he lived a week longer, was the oldest member of the British medical profession. The son of a Huntingdonshire lawyer, he went to Australia in the early days of the gold rush. He worked as a digger, gardener, painter, and knew Melbourne before it was developed. He took his medical degrees on his return home and practised until two or three years ago.
