AT AMBERLEY

BUOYANT WINS STARKY MEMORIAL

AMBERLEY TO •; ; : WINSOME B"OY (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") . CHRISTCHURCH, 27th April. Glorious weather favoured the Amberley Racing. Club for the annual race meeting, which attracted the customary large crowd of city racing folk as well as country patrons from a wide area. The totalisator handled £11,621, against £10,456 last year. BRACKENFIELD HURDLES. Racing opened with the Braekcnfiekl Hurdle Handicap;: for which the five acceptors lined up. tOriflamb was a good favourite, • and- he .'pulled his backers through, in. good, style. Amorist, Money Bag,' and- Aberfeldy" showed the way to the second hurdle,', where Money Bag fell. Amorist then, went on just clear of Aberfeldy, who was'headed by Kaikahu after going half a mile. Prom that point Aberfeldy gradually -drifted back. Amorist continued in charge along the back, when Oriflamb commenced to move up. Oriflamb joined Amorist at the last hurdle. From that point Oriflamb always had the race in hand, and he -beat Amorist easily by_ a length. Kaikahu hung on well to i finish half a dozen lengths away, while Aberfeldy was "a poor fourth. Oriflamb ran a. solid race, and he appears^ to,-have become more generous. Amorist is a good juniper with plenty f speed, but;he lacks stamina. Kaikahu is not.ready yet, but he ran a good race. Aberfeldy performed badly, as in addition

to showing less speed than usual, his jumping -\vas far from good. SEADOWN HACK HANDICAP. The scratching of Karitane left a field of twelve for the Seadown Hack Handicap. Great Star was a strong favourite, with Huntley d well-back' second fancy. Sea Raid led Great Star, Huntley, Noteworthy,. and Solfello round the turn, . where The Bailiff improved his position. Great Star was travelling very comfortably nt this stage, and he shot to the front when the straight was reached. The Bailiff threw out a strong claim, but Great Star held his place, and won easily by half a length. Great Star outclassed the opposition, and he will win big open events next season. The Bailiff ran a sound race after being a trifle slow to jump out. Sea Raid was always going well, and only failed in the last few strides. Huntley also put up a useful performance, and he looks a promising maiden. Noteworthy and Solfello failed to run on in the straight. STARKY MEMORIAL. A field of six contested the G. B. Starky Memorial Handicap, the chief event o£ the day. Gay Sonnet was a hot favourite, but she ran much below expectations. Buoyant took the lead at the start, Prickles, Amor, Gay Sonnet, Evening, and Corinthic following in that order. With half the journey gone Prickles joined Buoyant in front, while Corinthic and Amor were next. They raced like this for the next two furlongs, when Gay Sonnet made a forward move which landed her in third place at the home turn, where Evening also improved his position. Buoyant had a slight advantage over Prickles at the entrance to the straight, where these two were out clear. Buoyant was still going well a hundred yards from the post, where Prickles was gradually overhauling him. In the -last few strides Prickles was going the better of the two leaders, but she just failed to head Buoyant in time, though she was in front in the next stride. .Evening was 'over a length away, while Gay Sonnet was fourth. The winner has improved a lot during the last, few months, as in the. spring he found six furlongs quite Jar enough. Prickles ran a creditable race, but she seems unlucky. Her winning turn should come soon. Evening gave a decent showing, but Gay Sonnet failed to display her usual brilliancy. Amor, faded out at the end, as did Corinthic, 'who was sore. NOVICE STAKES. Kate Kelly and JJiss Nightraid were withdrawn from the Novice Stakes and, in a field of thirteen Solgele was a little better backed than Bonrose. The public picked it well, as these two were the dividend earners. Solgele was first to show out, with Shipshape and Amourette next, while at the end o£ two furlongs Kentish Lady also joined in, with Bonrose commencing to move up. Solgele led to the straight and won easily by two lengths from Bonrose, while two lengths further back Amourette beat After Ten and Shipshape by a neck. Solgele never looked like losing. • He lacks stamina, but. lie is pretty good in this sort of company for five furlongs; It was the third year he had won this race, a result which suggests that the club would do better to restrict it to horses who have never won a race. Bonrose and Amourette, who.filled the minor places, were others in the field with wins to their credit. Valuator was unruly at the start and got off badly. AMBERLEY HANDICAP. There were five starters for the Amberley Handicap, Arrowmir being the favourite. He led down the straight, but was tackled by Winsome Boy and Paper Boy, the former winning by a head from Paper Boy, who beat Arrowmir in the last stride by a head, while Para was close up. v . Winsome Boy Avon in attractive style and will do still better before long. Paper Boy • was finishing on very strongly. Arrowmir, on the other hand, was stopping at the finish and probably was a trifle unlucky. . GLASNEVIN-HACK HANDICAP. The scratching of Paper Boy, Solgele, Solfello, After Ten, Karitane, and Hounslow left nine starters for the Glasnevin Hack Handicap.. Impertinence was favourite, but Thurso and Honeycomb were also well supported. Briarthorn, Thurso, and Impertinence were the early leaders, but at the end of three furlongs Thurso dropped out quickly, interfering with Ripdale, who was at the head of the next bunch. Impertinence led Briarthorn round the far turn, where Honeycomb put in an appearance. Honeycomb headed Impertinence at the entrance to the straight and won as he liked by two lengths. Impertinence faded out in the run home and Ripdale gained second place two lengths in front of Troilus, who finished fast. Impertinence was" next, her effort being disappointing. _' Honeycomb won in impressive fashion, and will do still better. Ripdale did not, look quite ready, but ho ran a sound race. Thurso Was. unlucky. ' liosults":— Bracfceufleld Hurdle Handicap, of 120 soys; one mile and flvo furlongs.—l Oriflamb, 10.13 (A .T. Peart), 1; 3 Amorist, 9.0, 2; A Kaikahu, 11.1. 3.
