AT TE RAPA

AUSSIE SCORES AGAIN

SPHLXT TO BBNZORA.

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.")

HAMILTON, 27th April.

The . Waikato ■ 'Autumn Meeting was opened in Te Rapa to-day in fine -weather and there was a good attendance. Large fields were■'. the order of the day, and there were several surprises. The totalisntor handled £31,£i4, against £34.275 10s on the first day last year. FRANKTON HURDLES. Nineteen started .in the Frankton Hurdles, and Vivo was a good favourite over Higliflown. Ned Kelly led for a mile. and then Ripon Abbey had a short turn iii the lead from Star Comet. Running into the straight Star Comet took command from Ripon Abbey, Wiltshire, Uralla, and Vivo. Once over the last fence Wiltshire challenged and beat Star Comet by a length. Vivo, who nearly lost her rider at the third to last fence, was two lengths away third, and Cybele fourth. Next came Uralla and Odin. Wiltshire won well and should be thoroughly ready for June. Star Comet and Cybele shaped particularly well for beginners and should be worth keeping in lniud. Vivo made up a lot of ground ! over the last few furlongs. Wiltshire and Star Comet were little fancied ' and both returned solid dividends. Glena Bay fell at the second fence, his rider R. E. Thomson having his left leg broken. MAIDEN STAKES. There were twenty-seven truuncrs in the Maiden Stakes and most support came for the Kingsland-Measurer bracket and the Prince of Orange-Te Hoia bracket. Kingslaud and Look Out moved first, but Cruachan soon ran to the front from Princess Snow and Parfait Amour. The leading position were maintained round the bend, where Look Out, Prince of Orange, and Little Boy were handy. Prince of Orange finished, in good style and won by a neck from Cruachan, who beat Parfait Amour by a length and a half. Princess Snow was fourth, with Just Nell and Thurnus next. Prince of Orange will improve and shoidd be useful. Cruachan, a half-brother to Hymestra, displayed speed, and Parfait Amour did well considering that he drew the extreme outside at the barrier; Paiana and Kingsland fell. JUVENILE HANDICAP. An outsider in Rose Lupin effected a big surprise in the Juvenile Handicap,- for which Royal Finance was a shade better fancied than Praetor. Pellette. and Awamutu found their feet quickest and were the leaders into the straight from Rose Lupin, Bennie, Royal Finance, and Crimestor. These horses were all in the firing line inside the distance, where Eraser ranged up on the outside. A great battle over the last fifty yards saw Rose Lupin win by a head from Fraser, who beat Pellette by a short neck. Crimestor was close up fourth, with Royal Finance, and Trig next. Fraser came from a long way back and would have won with a stronger horseman aboard. Royal Finance ran i a good race from an outside post position. Praetor, also badly drawn, was never sighted. Crimestor and Tauru are likely improvers. STOREY MEMORIAL CUP. The. Storey Memorial Cup was a great betting race, with Corinax in slightly more demand than Aussie. After going about a furlong Aussie took charge, and once the field had properly settled down he had Mosque, In the Shade, and Titree as his nearest attendants. Aussie was still in charge entering the straight, closely followed by Mosque, Queen Arch, King Lv, and Royal Doulton. Aussie held his own in the run home, and won by half a length from Mosque, who beat Corinax by a similar margin. In the Shade, who put up 71b. overweight, was fourth, followed by; King Lv, Thursby, and' Royal Doulton.

Aussie registered an outstanding performance and ran out the mile. and. a quarter in great style. After the race the Gold Cup and a pair of field glasses attached to the stake were presented to G. Paul by Mr. J. A. Young, M.P. L. G. Morris, who rode ttib\ winner, was also presented with a gold-mounted whip. -LINLEY HACK HANDICAP.; - Another: good pool ou the Linley' Hack Handicap saw Indolent .slightly better backed than Kaha. Eangitaha was badly left at-the start,;and Indolent was also slow away. Arikitoa and Gay Cockade made most of the running, and were the leaders into the straight from Indolent, Black Maire, Always, and Kaha. Indolent had charge inside the distance, but Kaha finished well and.beat him by throe-parts of a length. Te Money,-.who came from a longl way back, was a similar distance away third, and' Gay Cockade fourth. Always and Black Maire were next; Kaha won nicely, but would have found it more difficult if Indolent had begun better. Black Maire should do better nest time, as he was .unlucky at the distance. HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP. Mithra was a■' good favourite for the Puketaha Highweight Handicap, with Respirator and Paitonu also in demand. Prince 1 Lv was early in charge and led to the straight from Owairaka, Paddon, and Sir Russell. Once in line for the post,. Paddon. took charge' and won- by three-parts'of a length, from Respirator. Mithra,was-,a neck away third, and Sir Russell fourth. Next came Hipo and Barometer. ' .-' ' . . ■

■Paddcin'was having his first run for. a long time, arid consequently was not fancied to any extent. . His dividend was very substantial. Mithra %vas a.long way back in the. middle stages-and finished on well.

PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP. Kingfield, Vallar, and Benzora were best

backed in the President's Handicap. Tea Time was left standing at the post.' Subdivision was first away, and made play to the turn, where Vallar, Town Bird, and Lady Qnex were handy. Vallar had charge at the distance, where Bcnzora and New Moon could be seen coming fast.Bcnzora continued his run and won by half a length from New Moon, who beat Vallar by a neck. Macroom was fourth, followed by Lady Quex and Kingfield. Benzora was awkwardly placed at the turn, and finished at a great rate. It appeared as if M'Tavish on : Vallar did not realise the dangeu on the outside at the finish. Kingfield was very unlucky, being half-turned round when the barrier went up. BERESCOURT HACK HANDICAP. Valuation and Standfast carried most support in the Berescourt Hack Handicap, which was-run in semi-darkness. Brilliant Light led to the turn, with Mark Mint and Air King well up. Brilliant Light looked a winner at the distance, but Unoco finished fast and beat him by a head. Maori Boy, who was unlucky, was right up third, and Mark Mint fourth. Standfast was left some lengths and had his chance settled.
