AUCKLAND, This Day. Kew Wan (23), arrested yesterday oni a charge of stealing a watch, chain, gold sovereign case, and an American, gold piece, of a total value of £16, the property of Charlie Hong Jong, was today fined £5, and ordered to make full restitution, in default two mouths' imprisonment. Ah Kew, who appeared fop Kew Wan, said that the accused was out of work, and wanted to raise sufficient money to pay his fare to Hamilton and afterwards proceed to Temuka to see his brother, who was ill. He succumbed to sudden temptation by stealing when visiting Jong's shop. It was his intention to go to Hamilton to get enough money to redeem the jewellerypawned, and then post it anonymously to Jong. Chinese might gamble and smoke opium, but dishonesty was looked upon as a serious offence by their race. The accused would bo severely dealt with by the Chinese themselves, and afterwards sent to Coventry.
