•<* LONDON, 7th March. A mossago from Funchal, in the Island of Madeira, states that torrential rain caused a landslide, the noiso of which was like an earthquake or a cannonade. Many houses were completely, overwhelmed, a, hundred cattlo woro buried under thousands of tons of rock and earth, and many lives aro believedi lost. "Times" Cables.
LONDON, 7th March. "The Times" Funciial correspondent states that after a prolonged drought torrential i rains fell inland. The rivor Vincents rose rapidly, eroding its banks. The inhabitants of the village of Kqs-
ario 'fled uphill in pauie, driving cattle - before them. Suddenly they were over- ■ whelmed in' landslides and enormous ■ boulder?. Many woro swept back to the river and caTl-ied to sea, and others were buried. The landslides continued for hours. • A number of. rescuers, including firemen and ambulance men, were buried.
