STREET WORK

(To the Editor.)

. Sir,—Saturday's "Post" has the following:—"Councillor J. Aston has given notice to move at the next meeting of the City Council that the footpath at the main gate of the Botanical Gardens be set back." One would like.to know why such setting back, including shed and telephone box, was not done before. Some time brick workmen armed with ropes, etc., cut and trimmed the hill in Anderson Park, leaving it in a finished condition. Shortly after the men returned and another slice of the hill was cut down. Then a large telegraph pole was erected, including tram and lighting wires, etc. Along came the kerbing gang, only to find the pole in the centre of the gutter. Result, another hole 12 inches away was dupf and another pole erected, besides shifting wires, etc. Further on the Gardens, where the filling was done last year so as to straighten Glenmoro road, a footpath was formed; now the kerb is being kept some distance from the same, not straightening the road but deliberately putting a fancy curve in the road. If blunders are made. in. Glenmore street, .one wonders how many are made in.the other districts. —I am, etc., v RATEPAYER. ,
