SUMMER BLOOMS

SHOW AT NOKTHLAND

The summer show of the Northland Horticultural Society was held on Saturday. The president of the society (Mr. O'Connor), in welcoming Mr. K. A. Wright, M.P. for the district, who officially opened the show, referred to the effects of the storm on the flowers. Many promised exhibits were not entered on that account, while all blooms had vsuf£ered more or less.

Mr. Wright said that, taking the storm into consideration, the show was. one of great merit. He had opened many flower shows in the past, and after seeing some of the recent ones, considered that the shows had improved, both in quantity and quality.

The show was a surprisingly good one after so, violent a storm. The hall was well filled with exhibits, which made an attractive display of colour. Mr. Sutherland made an excellent exhibit of pot plants, a tribute tp the skill of his gardener, Mr. George Fearne. Mr. Walter Steer made a fine trade exhibit of gladioli, including the champion bloom, but unfortunately the blooms were not named. Mr. T. C. Bilby also made a fine show exhibit of gladioli. An exhibit from the cemetery garden, grown by Mr. Harlanc, was prominent in front of the stage. The general entry of gladioli was outstanding, and pansies also attracted a good deal of attention. An orchestra played during the, afternoon and evening, and afternoon tea was provided.
