ADELAIDE, 25th January.

The match between England and South Australia commenced to-day. Typically quiet batting was displayed by Hobbs and Sutcliffe on opening for England. Wall, the fast bowler.

Hobbs and Sutcliffe recorded the best opening partnership for England for the tour to date. They beat Sutcliffe's and Jardine's opening, of 148 against New South Wales by 7. Both batsmen scored evenly throughout, experiencing no, trouble with the mediocre South Australian attack. Hobbs was in 144 minutes. He hit seven 4's. Sutcliffe was very quiet after Hobbs's departure. ' .

Tyldesley, tlic next batsman, was not at home to Grimmett. -Bain threatened at the tea adjournment, when the score was one wicket for 190. Slitcliffe's' score being 93. ..'

After tea Tyldesley lost his wicket after adding one. His was an unimpressive innings and failed to' bear out his English reputation. Sutcliffe had batted 233 minutes, and played careful cricket. Grimmett then had three wickets for .00, but dropped a return from Jardine when the batsman was 8.

Rain fell soon after tea, necessitating the use of sawdust. ■ Hendren and Jardine batted cautiously, the latter staying at 8 for nearly half an hour. He was dismissc-d without lidding to that. . .' .
