CHANNEL TUNNEL
AN ENGINEER'S OPINION
Australian Press Association. ;
LONDON, 25th January. Mr. DalryinpJe Hay, the engineer responsible for the tunnels under the London, Severn, and Firth of Forth, interviewed, said the many irresponsible statements published had created an opinion that the Channel Tunnel could be constructed easily, but until those responsible had worked out definite plans the public should ' not assume that the work can be done even at a reasonable cost. "My view, of the Channel Tunnel, like ' most tunnel propositions, is that it is a gamble. There is no real knowledge of the thickness of the grey chalk except at either end of the tunnel. The tunnel would be 130 feet below the sea, anjil it would be impossible to apply compressed air in which men could work. Still, the' problem can be solved if handled in the right way."
