» WORKS IN PROGRESS The Main Highways Board reports as follows on the progress o£ works in the southern portion of the North Island and the northern districts of tho South Island:— Wanganui-Horopitq.—During the month o± chums of widening was completed, preparations for laying the base course over the unuietalled iength of this highway are in hand. Wellington-Auckland, via Taranaki iNo. U Highway District).—is'gahauranga Gorge Section: The wliole of this section lias been paved with bituminous concrete. Johnson vilie-Tawa Mat: 20 chains of bituminous concrete pavement has been laid down at tho northern end of this section. I'awa Flat-Porirua: The erection of a concrete bridge is in progress. PareniataHorokiwi Valley: J.OS chains ot second coat sealing has been completed, and preparations for further sealing are in hand. Horokiwi Valley-i Jaekakariki: 40 chains of this road has been prepared for surface sealing, and several ■ corners have been widened. Lcvin-Palmerston North, via Shannon.— Leviu-Tokomaru: The laying o£ a bituminous macadam wearing course between Levin and Waoku Stream is in hand. Foxton-Shannon —Manawatu River-Shan-non Borough: Metalling has been completed, and the road was opened for traffic on 22nd December. Sanson-Palmerston North.—Sanson-Awa-huri: From Sauson to Mt. Stewart the foundation course has been laid. From Mt. Stewart to Awahuri bridge formation and reconstruction work is in hand. A contract has been let for bituminous concrete surfacing from Sanson to Mt. Stewart, and plant is being installed at the Oroua River. Napier-Wellington, via Wairarapa (No. 9 Highway District).—Taita Gorge-Silver-stream Bridge: 2 chains of widening has been completed. ' Akatarawa JunctionRiniutaka Hill: A number of corners on this section have been widened. A contract has been let for the erection of the Mungarpa bridge, and excavations for the foundation are in progress. Upper Hutt-Waikanae.—Between .Reikioraugi and the Summit 32 chains of widening has been completed, and a further 8 chains is in hand. Napier-Wellington, via Wairarapa (No. 10 District).—Rimutaka Hill-Featherston: Widening work has been continued petween Clark's and "Midland." Widening work is also in hand at several other points. A commencement has been made with surface sealing, 15 chains of' first coat and about 35 chains o£ second coat work having been completed: Waiohine Bridge-Waingawa Bridge:. Widening and regrading between Udy's Hill and Waiohine bridge are in hand. Falkner's BridgeEketahuna: Widening has been continued on this section. Waiwaka Bridge: This bridge has been completed during the month. Napier-Wellington, via VVairarapa (No. 5 Highway District). —Waipawa-Te Ante section: The: bituminous surfacing of this section has been commenced and good progress is being made with the first coat. Dannevirke County section, Piri Piri deviation: The first' coat of bituminous sealing has been completed over a length of 44 chains. Woodyille County section: Tho second coat of bitumen has been completed on this section between Oringi railway crossing and Matahiwi deviation. Piri Piri overhead bridge: This work has been completed and the bridge was open to traffic on 20th December. Orua-Kiri-taki Bridge and deviation: Tenders have been called for the construction of this bridge and deviation. Farndon-Hastings.—Satisfactory progress is being made with the paving contract on this section; CO chains of concrete paving was laid during the month, making IS2 chains completed to date. Raurimn-Wades Landing. -— Pukerimi Bridge: The materials are on tho site for'the reconstruction o£ this bridge and work has been commenced. During the month, 30 chains of this road has been reformed and widened. Manunui-Owhango: Tha contract for reformation work on tliis highway is ncaring completion. To Kuiti-Bulls, via Taumaruuui.—S miles to Kaitangaweka,--Araniatai deviation: A commencementhas been mado with the construction of this deviation. Kura Kura deviation: 30 chains of bottom course metal has been completed, and the deviation is now open for traffic. Kaitangaweka-r Taumarunui: Tenders have been called for 376 chains of metalling between Mangaiti road Junction and Mapiu township. Hiwi road deviation: Tenders have been accepted for metalling this deviation, and work will be commenced immediately. From Okahukura northwards further widening is in progress, eleven and three-quarter chains having been completed during the month. Taumarunui-Junction Raurimu Wades Landing: Twelve chains of formation has been completed. RaurimuCounty Boundary: The formation on the Horopito deviation has been completed for one mile, and the metalling has been completed for 60 chains. Stratford-Taumarumii. —Paparata SaddleCounty Boundary: A tender has been accepted for metalling work, and a commencement has been made. TokirimaCounLy Boundary: ''. Widening and reformation has been continued, 8 chaius having been completed during the month. To Maire-Mangaohutu.— iVi chains of formation has been completed, and tenders have been called for 9 miles of ling-Masterton-Tinui. —Masterton County Section: A length of 80 chains of this road lias been surface sealed with one coat. A large, culvert has been constructed. Pahiatua-Pongayoa..— Tuscan Hill Bridge: This bridge aiid its approaches have been completed. Murphy's Bridge: The construction of this bridge is well in hand. Dryer's Rock road. — i chains of widening has been completed. Carterton-Long-bush Junction to Gladstone: Kowotau Bridge: The.flood damage repairs to this bridge have been carried out, and the reinstating of the damaged span is in hand. Nelson-Blenheim. —Whangamoa Hill: A number of sharp curves have been widened on this hill, and further work is in hand. Richmond-Collingwood.—Motueka Bridge: The construction of this bridge has been continued. Nelson-Westport.—Wairoa River Bridge at Brightwater: The dismantling of the old structure is practically completed. StokeRichmond: The construction of a bituminous macadam surface is in hand.
