UDY STREET EXTENSION
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—Whilst being quite in agreement with the Petone Borough Council in its decision to extend Udy street to connect up with Cuba street, I feel that I must add my protest lo that of others who consider that it is wrong to appropriata the Gas Debenture Fund to do the work. The fund was created by the sale of the Petone gas works to the Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board, and it has always been the policy of past councils to expend this money in works that would be of benefit to residents of all parts of the borough and not to those of any particular part. To use it now for the proposed scheme is a distinct and flagrant breach of an established principle. The proper course in this present case would be to place a loan proposal before the ratepayers at the forthcoming election, but apparently the council is not prepared to risk the proposal being defeated. If, Sir, our present council is prepared to spend the remainder of the Gas Debenture Fund I would like to propose that it should expend it upon the development of our beach. The foreshore is crying out for improvement, and if the council would spend this mo.ney upon the erection of up-to-date bathing sheds and conveniences and a band rotunda, and tea rooms, it would not only go far to develop what is undoubtedly Petone's greatest asset, but would also be acting in accordance with, the principle previously mentioned.—l am, "BEACH LOVES." 22nd January,. 1929.
