MORE DOGS COMING
A MATTER OF URGENCY
On Monday next the Niagara brings to Auckland twenty more dogs which have been sent from Alaska for use with the Byrd Antarctic Expedition. They are in charge of Mr. Taylor, who, in addition to being an experienced dog driver, is an aviator pilot. In order to arrange about the quarantining of these dogs, Mr. R. Brophy, the expedition 's second-in-command and business manager, arrived in Wellington this morning from Lyttelton. It is his desire to have the dogs quarantined at Dunedin rather than at Auckland, in order to avoid delay to the Eleanor Boiling's next trip. That vessel is due back at Dunedin between the 12th and 18th February, and it is hoped to send her away again, within 48 hours of her arrival. The exact date of the Eleanor Boiling's return to Dunedin depends upon the ico conditions in the Bay of Whales. These at present, according to a message from Commander Byrd, are worse than is usual at this time of year, melting having taken place to an insufficient extent to permit the Eleanor Boiling to unload directly on. to the shore.
Whilst in Wellington, Mr. Brophy will be conferring with the Government upon several matters of importance in connection with the expedition.
