CHANGE-OVER TROUBLE

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Under the heading, "Change-over Trouble," in last night's "Post," you ventilate a grievance of some of Wellington's housekeepers. Prior to the change-over system being adopted by the Electric Light Department, a definite promise was made that the Department would be responsible for all alterations which were caused by the change-over. In the article to which I refer the Department admits that this is correct, but submits that in regard to vacuum cleaners the addition of a transformer to the existing cleaner is all that is necessary. It is true that the transformer brings the 105 voltage cleaner up to the 230-voltage level, but at what cost to the unfortunate housekeeper? At, I submit, very great For example, the transformer attached to the cleaner adds very considerably to its weight, and makes it almost useless as fas as a woman is concerned. It is too heavy for the strength of the average woman. .

■The: departmental reply to the effect that cleaners have been installed in cer? tain homes since the promise was made to adjust all electrical appliances affected by the change-over may be perfectly correct, but this reply is siniply begging the question. Those who have installed 105----voltage cleaners since the promise hava done so at their own risk, and are in exactly the same position as manufacturers who have installed 105-voltage motors since the promise was made. The latter must adjust these motors at their own cost. That was the agreement, oyer which there can be no argument. But manufacturers who had 105-voltage motors prior to the promise are having them renewed or rewound, and the readjusted motors are quite equal to the originals. But in the case of domestic cleaners this is not so. While the cleaners fitted with transformers are' quite usable, they are, as I have said, far too heavy for housekeepers to handle, and I contend the council is committing jv' breach of faith which should not be allowed to continue. —I am, etc., "BROKEN PROMISE." 23rd January, 1929. ,
