PERSONAL MATTERS

At the conclusion of the meeting of the Executive Council yesterday, His Excellency the Governor-General presented to Mr. R.-N. Jones, Chief.Judge of the Native Land Court and Undersecretary of Native Affairs, the insignia of a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. This honour was conferred upon Mr. Jones by His Majesty tho King on 3rd June last.

The Minister of Internal Affairs. (the Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle) will arrive in Wellington, from the South to-mor-row morning. ' . .■ ■ •

The Minister of Railways and Customs (the Hon. W. B. Taverner) is expected to arrive- in Wellington . on Thursday morning from Dunedin.

The Minister of Education .(the Hon. H. Atmore) will leave .Wellington for Christchurch on 17th January, and will remain there until 22nd January. During that time he will confer with the local Boards of Education meet deputations, inspect 'some of the school buildings, and pay a visit to the Canterbury Agricultural College at Lin : coin. The Minister will proceed .to Oamaru on 22nd January, and after visiting the teachers', summer school, which is being held at the Waitaki High School, will proceed to Dunedin to attend a civic luncheon in honour of the Hon. T. K. Sidey and .the Hon. W. B. Taverner on 23rd January. Mr. Atmore will remain, in Dunedin until 28th January, and during his stay will, attend the Burns anniversary function on 26th January.

Mr. H. H. Sterling, General-Manager of Eailways, will be returning from the South on Thursday morning..

Mr. and Mrs. H. F. yon Haast left Vancouver on 9th January, and are to arrive at Auckland at the end of the month.

The Bey. W. M. Clow, D.D., and his wife arrived by the Marama to-day, in the course of a world tour, telegraphs "The Post's" Auckland correspondent. Dr: Clow is an eminent preacher and scholar of the Presbyterian Church and spent his boyhood in Auckland, where: his father built the St. James. Church. ' . ..-

Messrs.' M. Dennehy, railway solicitor^ and 1 J. Carnaehan, bus manager, are attending a meeting of the Transport Licensing Authority in Napier on Thursday in connection with the issuing of licenses for, the running of railway buses between Napier and Hastings. Mr. Dennehy will subsequently proceed to Gisborne and Opotiki on departmental business.' ■•' ■

The Eev. J. F. Goldic. who founded the Methodist Mission ik the' Solomon Islands, 27 years ago, and who is coming to New Zealand shortly as president of the Methodist Conference, to be held in Auckland at the end of February, is one of the most influential men in the Islands. He is a member of the Governor's Council of Advice, and stands high, in the esteem of natives and Europeans alike.

Mr. J. I. King recently returned to Wellington after two years' absence abroad, completing his studies in architecture. In July, 1927, he took the R.1.8.A. final, qualifying for associateship, while in December of tho same year he successfully passed the final examination of tho Institution of Structural Engineers. This result was the more satisfying as Mr. King came highest in the London group in the structural steel, work paper. For the whole of the 1927-28 session Mr. King concentrated on advanced architectural design, under Professor Rich and M. Corflato, of the Bartlott School of Architecture. Mr, King spent some time on the Continent touring through Holland, Germany, Denmark, and Sweden. Mr. King is joining Mr. J. M. Dawson, F.N.Z.1.A., as junior partner. Prior to leaving for abroad ft£r. King was chief assistant to Mt. Dawson. '
