CRICKET SEASON

CONDITION OF THE GROUNDS MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEET | Preparations for the forthcoming season were made last evening, when the newlyelected Management Committee oi tlie Wellington Cricket Association held its first meeting. In expressing thanks lor his re-election, Mr. Wilson welcomed Mr. Ferguson, and also Messrs. Binnie and Hollings, the now members o£ tlie committee. Jlr. Wilson stressed the necessity of members sinking all club interests. "We are hero to legislate i'ov cricket in the true sense of the term," he said, "and not for any one club, an 1, as your chairman, will always endeavour, as I have tried to do in the past, to hold the scales even. If you will give me your assistance I am sure we can do a lot for cricket in this province. I thank yon once again, and I trust we shall have a successful season." The headmaster of Wellcsley College made application to have the services of the association's coach (Mr. Badcock) made available for the college senior boys once a week. The matter was referred to the Senior Championship Committee. BASIN RESERVE NETS. Tho Director of Parks and Reserves wrote pointing out that a number of tup nets for the Basin Reserve were in bad order. He asked that clubs be notified that no nets that were in bad order would be erected. "This is nothing new; we have it every season, and I think we are all anxious that clubs should see that their nets are : in proper condition," said the chairman. It was decided that the secretary should write to each club asking them to see that their nets are in good order, and pointing out that the nets would not be erected unless they were iv good repair. The following competition entries were received: —Kaiwarra Club: Two teams in the third grade. Railway Club: Junior and third A teams. . Kilbirnie Club: Senior, junior A, junior C, third A, and third B teams. Monday next was th day decided upon for the closing of entries for the various grade competitions. A request was made by the Wellington Technical College to enter a team in the junior B grade competition. It was decided to reply that the entry could not be accepted under rule 13, which provides that no club shall be admitted unless, it furnishes satisfactory proof of its ability to enter and maintain at least two teams in the association's competitions. SUB-COMMITTEES. Sub-committees were appointed as follow: —Senior Championship Committee-^ Messrs. Broad (chairman), Hanna, nnd Hollings; Junior Championship Committee—Messrs. Brabiu (chairman), Binnie, W. JCeenlyside, and J. H. Gray; Transfer Committee —Chairman of the Senior, Junior, Third, and Fourth Grade Committees; Postponement Committee^ —Chairmen of each committee. The appointment of the third and fourth grade committee was deferred for a week. Messrs. Varney, Christophersen, Ferguson, Binnie, and Doneghue were appointed a committee to obtain honorary members of the association. Messrs. M'Kenzie, Doneghue, and Ferguson were selected as the representatives for the Boys' League, Intermediate, and Public Schools' Associations respectively. Mr. K. Tucker was re-appointed selector for the season. "I-have very much pleasure in putting this," said Mr. Wilson. "I only hope Mr. Tucker will act, because I am" perfectly satisfied he is the best man we can have." OPENING OF SEASON. The secretary said that he had been advised that the Basin Reserve would be available for practice on 16th October, and for matches on 20th October. Mr. Hollings raised the question of whether the 16th October was not rather late. Mr. Christophersen mentioned that for the past two weeks only one man had been preparing the turf at the Kilbirnie Reserve. Mr. Wilson: "I do think we should endeavour to_ start practice on the 9th." Mr. M'Kenzie agreed with this suggestion, as he considered it would give clubs a better opportunity of getting their teams together. • . :. Mr. Christophersen: "It is purely a matter of lack of labour on the grounds, but I understand there are five men working at the Basin Reserve." At the suggestion of the chairman, it was decided that the Senior Championship Committee should make inquiries concerning the various grounds, and submit a report to the next meeting. COACH'S SERVICES. Jt was agreed that the Senior Championship Committee should submit recommendations to the next meeting as to. how the services of the coach could be used to the best advantage this season, and also to what club Mr. Badcock should be appointed. Applications from the Marist and Railway Clubs for the use of a practice wicket each at the Basin Reserve were referred to the Senior ChampioDship Committee. PLUNKET SHIELD DATES. The dates suggested for Wellington's engagement* in Plunket Shield matches were as follow:—Canterbury v. Wellington, at Christchurch, commencing on 22nd December; Otagp v. Wellington, at Wellington, January; Auckland v. Wellington, at Auckland, January. It was decided that the secretary should write to each of the minor associations asking for suggestions in connection with the running of the Town v. Country match.
