RETREAT OP CYCLONE
IMPROVING CONDITIONS
■ The extensive and intense depression situated over tho Tasnian Sea has moved eastward, although still cover- ■ ing tho Now Zealand area and the eastern portion of the Tasman Sea. Its centre passed over tho South Island last night, causing very low barometric reading's on tho East Coast of tho South Island tills morning, that at Christehurch being 138.98 inches. This disturbance has accounted for very unsettled weather over the whole of New Zealand, especially last night. Strong northerly winds, reaching galo forco in places, wore accompanied by general rain, falls being heavy in many parts oi! the North Island. Sinco last night tho winds have backed to westerlies. Strong'north to north-westerly winds are forecasted north of Westport and Kaikoura, south-westerlies thence southward. A goneral change to south- ■ westerlies will gradually extend .northward with a fall in temperatures. Unsettled and squally weather may still bo expected, especially north of Westport and Kaikoura, and further rain, .but ;i gradual improvement .may I'o expected!
