MINER'S DEATH
BURIED IN TUNNEL (By Telegraph.) , (Speoial to "The Evening Post.") AUCKLAND, This Day. A miner named William Everett, a married man, aged 34, was buried during tunnelling operations in a drainage tunnel in Edcndale on Thursday night. He died before the rescue party could reach him. A '/greasy back" camo down on, him in a drive that had progressed more than 40ft from a cutting, and two more falls, during the rescue operations sealed his doom. He spoke to the rescue party during the earlier stage of their work, and then there was silence. At 11 a.m. yesterday, about nine hours after the fall occurred, his body was recovered. ... When the fall occured there was only one oilier person, Bertrend- Segrave, a Irucker, in the tunnel. S^gYavo, realised that he alono had no chance.-of rescuing his mato, and'ho ran--to arouse peoplo in tho neighbouring housos. In a few minutes a gang of men, who had novor been underground in thoir lives, wore working with pick and shovel. Another fall took place,'.blotting out their efforts, but .they toiled on and wero close to success, Everett's mattock being pulled out, when again the earth c-iiino down, nullifying most of whut had been done.
