- A-most Interesting and amusing Irish comedy : occupies' tho chief position on the*'new programme screened for the first time last evening at the De Luxe Theatre. "Bringing Up Father" Is made the vehicle for telling the adventures, of an Irish family after it emigrates to America. They start off by having a birthday party at Long Island, whore most of them are , successful In making friends with a wealthy and very, aristocratic, family. The central .theme is, of course, a lovo story in wjiich one girl's jeal- • ousy causes considerable troublo following an accusation that the other is really making a fool of herself by aping the doings of society ioad,.crs. ; Everything is '.straightened out, however, before the end of the picture, as was to bo expected, but the episode provides a sweet lovo story-set in the midst of some very beautiful American scenery, as well sis giving an opportunity to; show some excellent views of Long ' Island and some of America's leading cities. The:stars arc/Polly Moran, Mario Drossier, and J. Farrei M'Donald, and they aro entirely adequate to the parts allotted to them. Tho supportlngi films included an Interesting Metro ■ Hews reel, showing some of the fighting in Chlnadurlng the-present troubles, which was followed by a New Zealand scenic dealing with Maori life in tho King Country.' The comedy was further added to by the inclusion of a light comedy, "Racing Days." On tho musical side of the programme, Mr; Emanuel Aarons plays "IBells tho Mqadow" on the Wurlltzer organ, while the Orchestra De Luxe played a selection from "The Student Prince" and "Pale Hands," ? from Amy Woodforde-Findcn's "Indian 'Love Lyrics," the cornet solo being played by. Mr. E. Elliott. The programme will be -screened again this evening, ana will be repeat:«d during;the coming week. „.'., "Metropolis," coming to the De Luxe Thcatro on _ 20th July, recalls . Wells's early novel, "When the Skeeper Wakes." The very scenes •tie like Wclls's illustrations, dazzling and farflung, and a littler sinister. Skyscrapers hang . above breathless canyons, wherein meander 'hordes of weird motors, aerial interlacing railways, where express trains streak, while through them busy airplanes loop and dart like dragon .flies. Below theso vibrato colossal machines. The story concerns one John Masterman, his only son, and Mary, a daughter of the people who dwells among the thousands of workers below. ■„Mary and Masterman's son meet, and the ,■ youth. -,realises the terrible conditions existing Jn the underground city. He changes places with one df the workers, and goes through a series 'of adventures which leave him practically demented. Mary Is captured by Rotwang, an inventor employed by Masterman,, and used In the creation of a .Robot, which Mastermari-calls "efficiency." This soulless woman preaches revolution to the workers, who destroy the city. It Is not until then that John Masterman realises that a .mediator-be-tween brain and labour is necessary for the well-being of humanity. :
