THE RETREAT.

Two travellers once took lodgings for about ten days at a tavern in York, and fared sumptuously, drinking two or three bottles of wine daily. On the last day a dispute arose about the speed of their horses, and at last they agreed to enter on a contest to see which was the faster. The landlord was appointed judge, each being the rider of his own horse. When they were mounted, the judge gave the words "One, *wo, three, and go!" Off they went, and the landlord has never seen or heard of them since.
