MOTOR-CARS KILL TREES

The Paris Municipal Council is serious ly concerned (according to the Paris correspondent of the "Daily Mail") at the great mortality of the trees in the boulevards and squares, and even in the famous Eois do Boulogne, as a consequence of the exhaust fumes from motor-vehicles. The Bois de Boulogne is one of the finest public parks in the world. It is outsido the' city walls and contains the two spacious racecourses of Auteuil and Longchamp. But the stream of motor-cars which daily flashes along its avenues, is so great that tlio trees are withering and aro threatened with extinction. Meanwhile, the trees on tlio boulevards and even on the Champs-Elysees aro in such a, sickly condition, that about ono-quarter of them die annually. The plane tree, so far, has been found to bo that which best resists tho exhaust gases. It has also been found that dwellers in basements in narrow and poorly aired streets frequently suffer from severe headaches, and, occasionally, even from poisoning, owing to the fumes which make their way into the. rooms. . ~
