NATIONAL FLAG
NOT . UNION JACK HERTZOG ADAMANT ILIi-FEELING GROWING United Press Association—By Electric Tel«« graph—Copyright; United Service. - . (Received 30th May, 2.30 p.m.) CAPETOWN, 20th May. Tho National flag of the Union is to be inaugurated on Thursday, Union Day. In the past fortnight strong feeling has been growing up throughout the Union owing to the Government's interpretation of the Act, particularly regarding flying both tho Union Jack and the national flag at particular, centres. At pre-eminently Dutch-speaking' towns and villages in the old republics, tho national flag will only be iowii, 1 ex-, cept in the provincial capitals, where both flags will fly on the principal buildings. In a largo number of small towns in the eastern part of the Cape Province, the Government's decision to fly only tho national flag is occasioning .deep resentment, but the strongest feeling of all has been aroused in Captown, owing to tho refusal to fly the Union Jack at Capetown Castle, which, for 52 .years, has been universally regarded as the chief building in the city. ■ The Premier (General J-lertzog), influenced, it is believed, mainly ; Uy Dr. Malan, refuses to make y, a concession to_ tho strong expressions of public opinion on this point, and to-day refused to meet an influential delegation, of ex-Sorvice men on the question. Tho effect of this grudging attitudo is most unfortunate. The Englishspeaking community were undoubtedly ready to unite in. tho celebrations/ but are now regarding .the ppsition resentfully. .
