NEW ZEALAND HILL
Tho reference made by "The Post's" London correspondent in Monday's issue to Mr. K. A. N. Madocks, who died as the result of injuries received ill the same accident as that in which the late Lord Trematon was fatally injured, prompted a Wellingtonian, who was a member of the first contingent dispatched to tho Beer War, to give a "Post" representative some particulars, of special interest to Boer "War veterans, regarding tho late Mr. Madocks's father, Brigadier-General W. E. N. Madocks, at present living in retirement at Denby, in Derbyshire. General Madocks was well-known to New Zealanders as Captain Madocks, having served as Staff-Captain to Col. A. Polo-Penton, R.A., second commandant of the New Zealand Military Force. At the outbreak of the South African War ho was dispatched for active service in South Africa, and was given command of the No. 2 Company. During the campaign, Captain Madocks distinguished himself at tho defence of New Zealand Hill (which was so named after the action), in a bayonet charge with Sergeant Gourley, of Dunedin, and Trooper Council, of Auckland, who were both killed. He later served on the staff of General Sir lan Hamilton, and at tho cessation of hostilities ho returned to Now Zealand in 1001. When his term of service in Now Zealand was finished ho rejoined liis old regiment, the Koyal Artillery. His next position was as- staff officer: to General Hamilton, when the latter was Inspector-General of tho Overseas Forces, and toured Canada and South Africa with his' chief. From the commencement of the Great War he served in the Expeditionary Force and rose to the rank of MajorGeneral. Since tho war he has served a term as Administrator" at Malta. He married a New Zealauder, Miss Laura Buller, daughter of Sir Walter Bullor.
