naki, and B. Sulton is ou tlic doubtful list. . Some hope is still held out that Svcnson, in whom Ihcro is 110 doubt plenty of good football, will see his way clear to don the jersey again. Warwick is oxpectei to be agaia doing service behind the pack, and the two Cooksons, Sutcliffe, and Kcenan aro on hand. Konberg is recovering from an injury, and will not appear until later in the season. Courtenay (senior B), Butland and M'Farlane (junior) are likely backs for promotion. New backs .include Heazlewood (the ex-Otago full-ljack, who was in the New Zealand trials last year), Skjellrup (from Nelson), Pelhain (the Maori representative who did so well on tour), Hewison (from Hawera), Jensen (from the Hawkes Bay district), and Stewart (a club-mate of Heazlewood's in Duuedin). The club is entering teams in all grades except senior B, and if sufficient players are offering a senior B team will be entered. Steps are in train for gymnasium improvements, and these will provide for CO per cent, more floor space, as well as up-to-date fittings. Opening Games. The games for the start of the local senior championships next Saturday are as follow: — Senior A.—Pctono v Oriental, at Potone; Athletic v. Eastbourne, at Eastbourne; Old Boys v.' 'Varsity, at Porirua; Johnsonvillc v. Oriental, at Johnsonvillc; Wellington, v. Selwyn, at Kil.biruic No. 1. Local Entries. Splendid entries have been received for the local grade competitions. There will as usual be ten teams in thop senior A grade competition, Eastbourne, winners of the senior B grade championship last year, coming up to take the place of Hutt. The senior B has drawn eight teams. In. some of the local grades a falling-off is to bo noted, but this is brought about by the inauguration of grade competitions confined to the- secondary schools. It is expected that there will be abo.ut forty teams in the school grades, so that, all told, the entries in the championship competitions will show a marked increase. Entries, apart from the school grades, • are as follow: — Senior A.—University, Borhampore, Wellington, Old Boys, Eastbourne, Marist, Oriental, Petone, Athletic, Poneke. Is it possible for a referee to blow a whistle and also perform the duties of ;. member of the Management Committee? This question exercised the minds of tlie delegates at the annual meeting of the Whangarei Eugby Union, when a motion was moved to' the effect that selectors and referees be debarred from serving on the Management Committee. The mover said that invariably when the duties of the Management Committee were being allocated several were not available, on account of having to control games.. Ho wished in nowise to east any reflection upon the capabilities of either referees or selectors, but ho was sure that it would bo to the advantage of the Management Committee in both work and proficiency if members were not asked to serve in a dual capacity. Speaking under instruction of the Bcferees' Association, a delegate said ho did not consider it a fair thing to debar members from taking other executive positions. The union would not on such a sound footing if it had not been for the assistance of referees in the past. Another delegate considered that referees should bo well represented on the union, otherwise members would not rceive the support they should from that body. A supporter of the motion said ho had yet to find theactive referee who could fulfil, as ho should, his duties on the Management Committee. The more independent followers iv the union the better for the game. ■ The motion was lost by a large majority. Notes. Peterson, tlie Otago representative wing three-quarter, who played prominently in tho match with Wellington last year, is likely to play in Wellington this season. Huxtable, Ilawkes Bay representative throe-quarter, is also expected. Falwasscr, the well-known Maori, Hawkes Bay, and Taraliaki representative, has transferred to Wellington, and will probably bo turning out- with Berhampore. He should be a valuable back to tho Light Blues. It is not yet certain whether G. Lang will take tho full-back position for Berhamporo or play in the three-quarter line. An injury to a foot some time ago is likely to prevent G. Sceats from carrying on this season as tho 'Varsity-wing-forward. Johnstono the Wanganui representative forward, is listed as a player likely to be transferred to Wellington in tho near future. One of 'Varsity's new members is Maekin, who captained tho Auckland 'Varsity team to Fiji last year. He plays as a five-eighth. Burns, the well-known 'Varsity forward, will not bo turning out this season. Old Boys have sustained a temporary loss through tlie unfortunate injury to U. Shannon, who broke an ankle while training recently. Shannon is a good club man, and a very keen player. Hardly a day passed but what ho was spending his spare time in the walrr or on the football ground keeping himself in good fettle. He graduated for a place in tho senior team from the school-boy representatives iv 1920; ho was in the Wellington College first fifteen in 1922, and was ju"im' roproscntivo last season.
