STRANGE MURDER
THEORY IN TRUPHENE CASE IS ALLEGED VICTIM,ALIVE? (United Press Association.—Copyright.] , (Received 9th March, 2.45 p.m.) PARIS, Bth March. A startling theory, grimly reminiscent of Edgar Allen Poe, is advanced to explain the Truphene murder on Ist March, when a body was found burnt by the wayside. It is now suggested that Truphene, the supposed victim, who was in possession of more than £6000 iv money and diamonds, himself murdered an unknown man and substituted the victim's body dressed in his own clothes and set fire to it, hoping to mislead the police into believing that he was dead. Bhe theory is supported by three men identifying Truphene I from a photograph as the driver of a ' coffee-coloured motor-car in which it is believed the body was conveyed to the scene. Two women well known to Truphene state that he mentioned that he had a presentiment that ho would be assassinated and his body burned; also giving Amsterdam, where his new position was. Another intriguing'circumstance is that Truphene's overcoat in the pocket of which were thu small scales/ used in weighing jewels was found on the roadside near the body.
