AMATEUR ATHLETICS

MEETING AT PETONE AUSTRALIANS INVINCIBLE After rain had, sent many liomu disappointed ou the previous evening, the attendance at the Petoue Amateur Athletic Club'u iirst electric light meeting Jast I night-was sufficient to justify fully the young club's enterprise. Included in the crowd, which was estimated at well over Jivo thousand, were many visitors from the city and from all parts of the Valley. The meeting itself was a suecessMn every way. Despite the threatening weather, the competitors were present in full force, and, except in the cycling events, the winning places were well distributed among the starters off the different; marks. The officials were right on their job, and as race followed race without the sign oil a. hitch the onlookers waxed increasingly enthusiastic over , the bill of fare provided. ' The track was a little on the soft side, but was nevertheless firm and the major-' ity of the times registered were good. Scarcely a- breath of wind disturbed the warm air, and, although rain threatened, it never fell. The lighting arrangements, provided entirely by voluntary labo.ur, were admitted to be excellent. In addition to the powerful arc lights which encircled the track, two powerful beams, focused from the grandstand, kept the: competitors well in view. The great attraction' of the meeting admittedly lay in the performances of the visiting Australian c.yelistsj J. Standen and T>. Gray, who did all,..that was expected of them and more; They carried all before them, and neither was beaten in any event save by his team mate. In spite .of the fact that a win for them soon came to be taken as a matter of course, they never failed to receive the applause they earned.
