JUSTICES' ASSOCIATION

jLNNUAL MEETINa The Mayor (Mr. Gr. A. Troup) presided at the annual meeting of the Wellington Justices' Association held at the Magistrate's Court last night. Mr. Troup congratulated the Justices on the good work they had done during the past year, and wished the association all success in the coming year. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted. It was pointed out by Mr. Gr. W. Slade that it was somewhat surprising that only £191 10s had been collected in subscriptions as the year had closed with a membership of 440. Mr. I. Salek, hon. treasurer of the association, said the charge had been levelled that the association was not doing enough benevolent work, but they had not turned down a deserving case which had come before them. The association had entertainea the prisoners at the various gaols at Christmas time, and he hoped that this work would be continued. It was this sort of treatment which was helping to reform prisoners. He did not think for a moment that the members of the association desired dinners or picnics, but would prefer that any funds they had to spare should be devoted to brightening the lot of prisoners. • The recommendation of the executive that £45 should be voted for the purchase of a piano for the Mount Crawford prison was adopted. The following officers were elected:— President, the Eight Hon. Sir Robert Stout; vice-presidents, the Mayor of Wellington (Mr. G. A. Troup). Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., and Mr. E. Page, S.M.; hon. solicitors, Messrs. Salek, Turner, and Brown; hon. auditor, Mr. J. L. Arcus; hon. treasurer, Mr. F, Dyer; hon. registrar, Mr. I. Salek; local deputies, Messrs. J. H. Stevens and J. A. M'Leavey (Palmerston North), B. Goodbehere (Feilding), E. G. Eton and R. Brown (Masterton), E. J. Hill (Blenlieim); members of council, Messrs. R. W. Armit, A. Longmore, and D.'Keir. ,
