POWER FROM PLANTS

Following upon 'references recently to the work which is being undertaken by the Department of Hcicntiiie aud Industrial Kesearch in connection, with the production. of power alcohol from grasses and straw, I have received details of ; similar extensive and successful experiments which arc bciug conducted in Germany on a. commercial scalo (says a writer in' the "Glasgow Wookly. Herald")- By these processes sawdust, straw, sisal; waste, and bagasse are made to yield sugar and ethyl alcohol. In a period of one hour the cellulose content of the raw materials is converted by treatment into glucose, which in turn is made either into cattle food or into sugar fit'for human consumption.- As much as CO per cent, of the weight of the dried sawdust has been obtained in pure sugar, and in the case of straws and other materials even higher percentages are obtained. The development of the process is of such consequence to the Dominions and colonies,• as well as to this country, that several Imperial representatives, including an expert from Australia, have been appointed to visit Germany arid report upon-the discovery.'
