INTEREST IN BANKS ■ ■ ■: "Evening Post," 9th March. ' -Business during the week has been on a: moderate scale, but the keen public interest in bank shares continues unabated, as the sales recorded hereunder will show. Little attention has been paid to Government stocks, and local body loans have not attracted much attention. In Wellington, offers of £100 were made for the s?i per cent;, issued by Wanganui City, but sellers gave no hint of their value of this stock. Business in company debentures was confined to 10 per cent, bonds and stock of New Zealand Breweries. Buyers were offering £90 for Glaxo debentures, but sellers were silent. Shares in all the banks usually:, figuring in the lists were dealt in, excepting, the D longterm mortgage issue of the Bank of New Zealand, of which there were buyers at 265. There was a fair turnover of the .National Insurance Company's shares, and for Standards buyers were offering 62s 6d— no sellers. . . ; . ■ In financial and stock and station companies' shares,, business was slack, although a'number of transfers of Dalgety's shares ou:;th'e Melbourne register were recorded..-Goldsbrougb Morts. had buyers at 48s-9d,; sellers not quoting.; National Mortgage shares : were in demand at 70s, with nov-price named by sellers. New Zealand, and River Plate Company's shares were wanted,' with '.offers up. to 295, but 'sellers unresponsive.'. Wellington Investment T.- and A. shares were wanted at 10s sd, "but sellers .asked 11s. Sellers of New Zealand''Guarantee Corporation (8s paid) shares .were quoting. 9s, and buyers of'preference.'sharesiu this company were offering 21s Cd; holders not quoting. There were sellers"iof; Abraham .and Williams preference shares at 87s 6d, but no buyers. Holders ipf-i-Equitable Buildings were prepared tpypirt at £9, but buyers gave no idea of thpir valuation., , "' ■ Coal shares'called for no particular attention. There-were, sellers of Westports at 31s 3d andvof rWaipas/atl7s 6d. In the gas 'sections-business was confined to shares in the Auckland and .Christchurch Companies,'but .buyers were in the market with 27s 6d":for ordinaries and l(ss 6d for preference/;shares in the. Wellington Gas Companyy-sellers'- prices not disclosed. Shipping :.sh'ares were not in strong demand. Sellers of P. and O. Dcferreds were quoting to £246; and later £242. Umou Steam Ship preference had buyers at 20s, sellers being prepared to take 20s 3d. Hud-dart-Parker preference were wanted at 20s lOd and 21s 3d (cum. dividend). •There was a little more interest shown in meat shares during the week, with some business done in Refrigeratiugs and. Gears: Canterbury Freezing were wanted at £8 15s, with no sellers, and for the preference shares in this company £4 18s (id was offered, sellers quoting £5 Is Gd. For Wellington Meat Exports . 10s was offered. • . ■ ■' Brewery shares had a small turnover. Sellers of.Tr.is quoted 50s, no buyers. Wards were in request at 35s Gd, but holdera wanted 40s? Timber shares were quiet, but there were- oners to buy LeyiandO'Briens at 34s 9d, uo sellers. Nationals shares were to be had for 12s Gd,.buyers not quoting.: For Kauris 19s 9d, subsequently, increased to 20s, was offered, sellers standing out for.2ls 6d. In the miscellaneous department, sellers of; Victoria Nyanza Sugars were quoting S4s, buyers not responding. Burns, I'hilps shares were offering at 435, buyers naming no iigure.
