(From Our Own Correspondent.) NELSON, 15th December. A fire occurred at East Takaka, completely destroying a ten-roomed house, owned and occupied by Mr. W. Sixtus. There was no insurance on the furniture, most of which was saved, but the house was covered by a policy of £300 in the State Office. . . .. . Distribution of prizes won by the pupils of the Boys' and Girls' Colleges took place .yesterday afternoon, and was conducted by the governors of the twd colleges, Mr. \V. Carroll Harley (chairman). The distribution was made by Dr. Tillyard, of the Cawthron Institute. Mr. Bevan Dodds, son of Mr. G. F. Dodds, of Nelson, has been appointed Dean of the DentaT School,-Otsgo University.-

The Nelson Academy of Music gave a recital of songs; piano and violin solos, and jther items on Tuesday evening. The contributions were very enjoyable, and gave evidence of great care haying been«bestowed by the teachers in bringing the pupils to such a promising stage. Wee tots played the piano with all the confidence of a grown-up, showing varying degrees of pro-

ficiency. The Nelson Defence Rifle Club held a competition at Wakapuaka range on Saturday. Sixteen members took part in the "shoot." Following are the details: E. C. Russell, 45-47—92; C. Randerson, 40----44-2—92; ,T. Vitetta, 43-45-4—92; R. Kenning, 41-43-5—S9; H. VJ Searle, 45-41-0— 36; V. Mitchener, J. Manssen, K. Inwood, P. Burn, each 84; F. Gledhill, 81; T. Carter, 80; W. Bradley, 79; J. Sharland, 75; W. A. Kenning, 72; H. Flower, 68.

At Takaka, Central plaj'ed a cricket match against East Takaka. Central proved the winners by an innings and 09 runs. East Takaka batting first, scored 24. (P. Eyles 10) and 61 (Reg. Eyles 22, T. Goodall 11). Central's first innings resulted in 184 runs (W. Berkett 93, W. Dodson 43, L. Hill 23).

Motueka and Takaka tried conclusions at tennis on Saturday afternoon. The result was: Takaka 19 sets 148 games, Motueka 12 sets, 118 games. Takaka won by 7 sets, 30 games. The weather has again changed to rain, besides being very cold. The hills are covered with heavy mists and there are indications .of further rain.
