A BRAVE ACTION
PRESENTATION TO SHIP'S
OFFICER
In recognition of his action in plunging into the harbour at Wellington on the night of 16th April, 1924, to rescue a waterside worker from drowning, Mr. J. D. Lundie, chief officer of the Waipahi, was presented with the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand's certificate at a gathering held on board the Waipahi yesterday afternoon. Representatives of the ship's company, the Union Company, the Harbour Board, and the Watersiders' Union were present, with Mr. L. Glover presiding. Mr. P. N. Rundlo, in making the presentation, pointed out how jealously tho awards of the society were guarded, but how well Mr. Lundie was entitled to the recognition. He recalled tho fact that Mr. Lundie had twice previously rescued women from drowning; and only a few weeks ago he-had acted as a surgeon on the ship's captain, performing a very necessary operation. Mr. J. O. Johnson, secretary of the Watersiders' Union, also spoke of the fine action of Mr. Lundie in plunging to the rescue of the drowning man. He stated that at the time there were quite a number of men on the wharf, but Mr. Lundie was the only one who had the presence of mind and bravery to effect the rescue.
Mr. Lundie thanked the speakers for their complimentary remarks.
