A working train comprising ten ballast trucks and a guard's van collided with a bullock straying on the line in a cutting on the south side of the Teremakau bridge, resulting in eight of the trucks and the guard's van being derailed. Nobody was injured and no serious damage was done to tho rolling stock, but the permanent way was badly cut up for a considerable distance and tho line blocked for through traffic. The train was travelling backwards, and _ a curve in tho line made it impossible for the driver to see the animal, in timo to avert the accident. The derailment occurred about 2.45 p.m. It is estimated that it will take six hours' work to clear the way, but a breakdown gang was still at work at 11 p.m., while the balalst trucks were being placed on the rails.
