NELSON, 19th September

The monthly meeting of the Nelson Land Board took place on Friday, Mr. A. F. Waters, Commissioner of Crown Lands, presiding. Applications for transfer of section 10, Block 4, Tadmor, O. L. and I. Mead (trustees of Hubert Mead, deceased), to C. H. Flanagan, and section 30, part-section 39, block 16, J. F. D. Bensemann to Jae. Harvey, were approved. The board also dealt with eleven applications to transfer, two mortgages, twenty-two miscellaneous, one application' to sublease, one application to surrender portion of area, one application for sleepercutting liceuße, one application for exchange of tenure, two forfeitures, one cancellation, one application to surrender, and sixteen applications for relief under the Deteriorated Lands Act, 1925.

The annual plain and fancy-dress ball of the Kiwaka branch of the Plunket Society was a great success, both from a social and financial point of view. Over a hundred couples were present. The prize for the best fancy dress (lady) wns won by Miss Barnett, "Powder Puff."

The hockey match between Wnitapu and Riwaka resulted in a draw, each side obtaining one goal.

A meeting oC the A. ,%nd P. Association was presided over by Mr. A. E. Max. Messrs Lancaster and R. Buick wrote accepting positions aa judges at the forthcoming show. Several routine maLters were dealt with.

The Nelson Ladies' Golf Club played the final round of the Encounter Shield and L.G.U. Medal Competition. The Encounter Shield resulted in a tie between Mrs. Waters and Miss G. Clark, 310, each, Miss M'Kay being next with 322. The L.G.U. silver medal was won by Mrs. Waters, and the bronze medal by Miss J. Clark. The best cards handed in were: Seniors—Mrs. Waters, 97-18—79; Miss M'Kay, 95-15—80; Mrs. Acheron, 101-10— S2; Mr. Campbell-Smith, 100-18—82; Mrs. Cook, 97-11—86. Juniors—Mrs. N. Kout, 101-24—77; Mrs. Harley, 114-34—SO; Mrs. Milner, 105-22—83; Mrs. Thompson, 113----30-83; Miss Price, 110-3G—B3. The following team has been selected to represent Nelson ladies in the basketball match at Wellington:—Z. Logan; W. Page, M. Liddle, M. Emms, H. Patterson, J. Stephens, M. Homer, M. Heal, and R. Gay.

Nelson is again to the fore in producing the best cadet in the South Island in Company-Sergeant-Major l£. J. Jamieson, of Nelson College CadeU. The honour carries with it the William Robert Fryer memorial prize, which was inaugurated by the Imperial Cadet Association of England. Under the scheme of selection, each regiment chooses its best cadet, the final award being made by Colonel Commandant M. M. Gardner, D.5.0., Southern Command.

The combined Bchools in Nelson gave a lino exhibition of fancy duncing, .marching, and actions in I'aney dress. There was also a competition in footbull and another in basketball, the former being won (senior section).by Convent, who beat all other competitors. In the junior division Central A proved victorious. In the basketball (seniors), Convent (6), beat Central (4); in the juniors, Nelson Central (8) was victorious over Convent (6). There was a large atttendance, the Weather being faultless. The sum of £18 4s was taken at the gate, and was handed over to the unemployed fund.

The Nelson Men's Golf Club held a grade championship contest on Saturday. In the final of the captain's trophy, Huggins beat Vercoe, 2 and 1. lie was also successful in the semi-final of the championship, 2 up. Huggins and Dodds now play the championship final, Dodson and Mitchell, or Snodgrass, the Leggatt Cup final, and Ash by and Hoby, the Cock Cup final. The contests will be over 30 holes, and will take place on Ist October.

The Nelson C4uu Club, held a "shoot" on Saturday. The Oliver Cup was won by M. Elliott with 42 birds out of 55 (with first barrel). A. Hargreaves was second with 37 birds. This match has been spread over the past three months, and only iirstbarrel kills were counted. Tcu-Liird open sweepstake. M. Elliott (21yds), 10 birds; H. Clark (13yds), D birds; C. B. Harmon (15yds). 9 birds. Anderson Cup: M. Elliott (21yds), 10 birds, won the "leg-in," A. Hargreaves (13yds), 0 birds, being,run-ner-up. Wakatu Cup: C. White (9yds), 9 birds, won the "leg-in"; N. Harley (9 yds), and W. Tidd (10yds) being "run-ners-up" with 8 birds. Seven-bird Open Sweepstake: H. Clark (13yds), 7 birds, proved the winner, with M. Elliott (23 yds), and A. Hargreaves (13yds), second with 6 birds. The Nelson-Marlborough Clay Championship will be held on 15th October. ft will be 21 birds off" 18yds rise, the winner receiving a gold medal.

To-morrow, at 2.30 p.m., in their auction rooms, 14, Brandon street, Messrs. H. Ernest Leigh ton, Ltd., will offer by public auction, under instructions front the Lower Hutt Borough Council, the business block.known as Grantham's improved corner site, at the corner of Main street and Laing's road, Lower Hutt, and opposite the Post Office.
