AMERICA AND FRANCE

TRADE WAR POSSIBLE

NO TARIFF RECIPROCITY

(United Press Association.—Copyright) WASHINGTON, 17th September. It is understood that the United States will next week reply to tho French proposal of tariff reciprocity that America cannot discuss tho question under the existing tariff law, and that Congressional sanction has been given only to a most-favoured-nation's treaty.

Some quarters indicate that a trade war betweon the two countries is inevitable, and it is probable that President Coolidge will either issue an embargo against French goods as a reprisal or raise the rates 50 per cent above the existing figures.' These powers were granted the President under the Fordney-M'Comber Law. It is pointed out, however, that in accordance with the present trade volume both countries would suffer equally in any such conflict.
