PETONE RELIEF WORKS

SPECIAL LOAN AUTHORISED

A well-attendod public meeing was held in Petone last night to consider the unemployment situation, the Mayor (Mr. D. M'Kenzie) presiding. Mr. J. Kerr, addressing the meeting, said that,the £1800 which had been spent on the foreshore had produced an asset, not only to tho borough, but to the city. The funds wore exhausted, and it had been decided that the fairest way of obtaining more money would bo to raise a loan.

The Rev. J. A. Lochore supplemented Mr. Kerr's remarks.

It was decided by the moeting to urge the council to raise a loan of at least £750 for tho Tclicf of -unemployment, and that the money should be spent upon the beach improvement scheme.

The Mayor stated that the Government would not subsidise the loan.fi for jL, but would give a 50 per cent, subsidy, providing 60 per cent, of tho labourwas paid at unemployment rates. The Borough Council then hold a special meeting, and after a lengthy discussion, decided to raise a loan of £1000.

The Town Clerk was authorised to re-engage tho men immediately.
