A NAVAL RACE?
AMERICAN PROGRAMME
NEW 10,000 TONNERS
Press Association.—Copyright) LONDON, 10th August. "The Times's" Washington correspondent says that, although President Coolidge is unperturbed over the Geneva failure, it is suggested in other quarters that a vigorous attempt will be mado to persuade Congress to enlarge the cruiser-building programme. It is expected that the eight 10.000-ton shirs already be^im will ba completed rapidly, necessitating a Congress" vote of & 10,000,000.' The ..uestion will then arise as to whether there shall be ten or twelve new cruisers, for which, however, it is improbable that more than mere authorisation will be sought. President Coolidge, feeling that it would look over-dangerously like a naval race, may oppose this, but probably it is too much to expect that he would resort to a veto if more than authorisation were involved.
