TEMPORARY RESPITE

GREAT DAY OP TENSION

REMARKABLE EVENTS

(United Press Association.—Copyright.) NEW YORK, 10th August. At 10.30 to-night the warden of the piison where the men are awaiting death announced that a respite had beea granted to Sacco. and Vanzetti, and a third murderer also awaiting electrocution, but a few minutes later retracted the announcement. The third murderer, named Madiero, had been convicted of a separate crime. He had sworn an affidavit over a year ago swearing that he was a member of a gang which was responsible for the killing of the paymaster, the crime for which Sacco and Vanzetti were accused. The latter's counsel considered the affidavit the strongest evidence for a new trial, but all authorities discredited it. At 11.25 the warden again announced that the men had been granted a respite of a week, but confirmation from the Governor is still lacking.

Late to-night a Boston message announced that the Governor had granted a respite up to and including 22nd August.
